Farewell, Marybank!

Posted by: | June 11, 2010 | 5 Comments |

Today was my last day at Marybank.  I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the children, parents and staff of the school for making my last two placements so enjoyable.  I have had a wonderful time with the P1-3 class, and this week I have had a great time in the nursery and with P4-7.  Thank you to all the children for letting me join in with the fun, thank you to all the parents for making me feel so welcome, and finally, thank you to Mr Quigley and the Marybank staff for making me feel like part of the team.  I am taking away so many happy memories.

See you all soon,

Mrs Wells

P1-3 had a great visit to Culloden battlefield.  We were met by John, dressed in a plaid, and he told us the story of Hairy Donald.  He was a member of the Stewarts of Appin clan and he rescued the clan banner from the battlefield.  He managed to knock out Redcoat soldiers with one punch – “oh, no, not again, Donald!”  After a very difficult journey, he managed to return the banner to the Clan Chief – well done, Hairy Donald!

We went out onto the battlefield and pretended to be Redcoat soldiers and Jacobites.  It was a good job that we had been practicing!  We also had a look at the blackhouse which was being rethatched with heather.

There was so much to see and do that we didn’t get time to see everything in the museum.  By the time we were back on the bus, we were all very tired, both children and adults!  What a great day we had and the weather was excellent too!

Bonnie Prince Charlie went to get the crown back for his dad.  His dad was the king before so he went to get the crown.  Bonnie Prince Charlie is his nickname.  His real name is Prince Charles Edward Stuart.

The Jacobites did the highland charge and some Jacobites got stuck in the bog.  It was really bumpy ground but before the Jacobites did the highland charge Bonnie Prince Charlie shouted Alba gu Brath.  700 Jacobites got killed in 2 to 3 minutes.  The Jacobites retreated but some Jacobites did not retreat.  Some stayed and kept fighting at Culloden battlefield and died.

Hairy Donald would say it was a silly place to have a battle.  It was too bumpy.  Prince Charlie chose a rubbish place to do the battle.  The Duke of Cumberland would say I like to keep the crown for my family.  Bonnie Prince Charlie would say I should have taken Lord George Murray’s advice.  Lord George Murray said I did tell him, I did tell him.

The Jacobites lined up and fired their canons.  The Jacobites said Alba gu Brath gu Brath and charged.  The bog slowed the Jacobites down but they reached the Redcoats.  1500 Jacobited got killed.

Hairy Donald said got to deliver the banner!

Redcoats and Jacobites were all over the country.  London under Redcoat control, so is Culloden, Dunbar, Prestonpans and Edinburgh.  The Jacobites have other parts of the country.  Bonnie Prince Charlie chose the wrong place for the battle.  Culloden battlefield.

The Jacobites shouted “Alba gu Brath, gu Brath, gu Brath” three times and then charged at the Redcoats.  They got through the first line but a second line of Redcoats were behind and the Jacobites were surrounded.  The Jacobites had to retreat.

Bonnie Prince Charlie said “I should have taken Lord George Murray’s advice.”  The Duke said “It was a great victory!”  Lord George Murray said “I wish Bonnie Prince Charlie was a bit less stubborn.”  Hairy Donald had a short interview “Sorry got to go.  I have a flag to deliver.”
